Professional Competencies:
Webinar participants will develop their professional competencies in the areas of: Law, Policy, and Governance. Our Associations are in the process of reviewing and codifying an updated list of Professional Competencies anticipated in Fall 2026.

Presenters:
Dr. Michael A. Smith is an experienced higher education leader with a strong record of service in student affairs, engagement, and retention. He previously served as the Assistant Vice President of Student Experience at Newberry College in Newberry, South Carolina, where he previously held several key leadership roles, including Assistant Dean of Student Engagement and Director of First-Year Programs, Interim Dean of Students, and Director of Student Engagement and Greek Life.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Smith has led comprehensive initiatives aimed at improving the student experience, including the development and implementation of first-year and transfer orientation programs, peer mentoring models, second-year experience initiatives, and year-long engagement strategies to increase student persistence and success. He played a key role in creating New Student Retreats and the First-Year Experience Comprehensive Plan, both of which have been instrumental in improving connection and retention for new students. Dr. Smith has supervised and directed multiple areas within student life including Greek Life, Esports, Campus Recreation, and Marketing and Communications.
Dr. Smith holds a Doctor of Education in Organizational Leadership in Higher Education from Abilene Christian University, a Master of Education in Higher Education Administration from Georgia Southern University, a Bachelor of Science in Health Promotion from Coastal Carolina University, and an Associate of Arts in General Business from Horry Georgetown Technical College.
