Nicholas Stroup (he/him) is a Ph.D. candidate in Higher Education and Student Affairs at the University of Iowa. Nicholas is a student affairs generalist with 13 years of experience across functional areas. His research focuses on the global dimensions of graduate student socialization. He is based in Iowa City, IA, USA, and serves as the Vice-Chair of Scholarships and Awards within our Commission. Here are some of the questions that we asked him:

What has been your favorite experience within the Commission? 

I have loved working with my co-VC Wadad to recognize the incredible work of student affairs professionals and researchers around the world. Lifting up the ways that these individuals are making higher education more inclusive, humane, and generative reminds me of the promise of higher education as a way to transform lives.

How was your experience attending the annual ACPA?

ACPA is joyful! I love CelebrACPA and the CGDSD reception, in particular, because of the opportunities to meet new people who have fantastic stories and approaches to their work in higher education

Ling Jin (she/her) is the Assistant Director of the International House at Duke University. She plans and organizes programs that support international students and scholars, and develops global learning programs to help participants grow intercultural skills. She is based in Durham, NC, USA and is serving as the Vice-Chair of Convention Experience within our Commission. Here are some questions that we asked her: 

What has been your favorite experience within the Commission?

I enjoy working with the diverse group of members of the Commission and learning from everyone!

Celia Ogna (she/her) is the Program Manager at Sage Corps, an entrepreneurial career accelerator for students. She wants to work closely with students and help them in their own international journeys. Celia is currently based in Helsinki, Finland, and has various experiences in supporting students to jump-start their careers abroad with internships. What career advice would you give to someone who is interested in going into international higher education?

Network, be interested in getting to know people, understanding their stories and their roles. This helps a lot and helps create strong connections, people in the industry are very happy to help, share ideas, tips and encouragement.

Lixing Li (she/her) is the Academic Advisor at Olin Business School at Washington University in St. Louis. She earned her Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration from the College of William and Mary. She is based in St. Louis, MO, USA, and is serving as the Blog and Podcast Editor for our Commission alongside Xiao Yun. Here are some questions that we asked her:

What has been your favorite experience within the Commission?

There are so many great experiences here: webinars, meeting with different people in podcast interviews, etc.

What career advice would you give to someone who is interested in going into international higher education?

Stay interested and curious. Be open-minded to people different from you and things you have never seen.

COVID-19 has challenged higher education professionals in different ways, what is one lesson that you learned from that?

Take care of yourself and stay positive. Opportunities usually come with challenges.

Gaurav Harshe (he/him) is the Assistant Coordinator in university housing at Florida State University. He is currently a second-year student in the Masters of Science Higher Education program. Gaurav researches international students and scholar communities in the U.S. He is currently based in Tallahassee, FL, USA, and is serving as the Vice-Chair of Educational PRograms within our Commission. How was your experience attending the annual ACPA conference? 

ACPA 2021 was my first year attending and presenting at the Convention. It was such a refreshing experience with the multitude of presentation sessions!
