We are now accepting applications for the Class of 2024-2026 ACPA Emerging Scholars. Recipients will be announced as 2024-2026 ACPA Emerging Scholars, with terms running from the 2024 ACPA Convention through the 2026 ACPA Convention. Each Emerging Scholar will receive a $3,000 research grant from ACPA, is expected to present on their research at an Emerging Scholars session at convention, and to fulfill 2 leadership commitments as described below.

Newly selected Emerging Scholars must participate in a meeting with the Senior Scholars, tentatively scheduled for Monday, March 18, 2024 from 10:30am-noon and 1:30-4:00pm in Chicago. Times are subject to change depending on the format of 2024 convention. Participants must register for the convention

Eligibility

Applicants must be an ACPA member. In addition, applicants either must be (1) between 3-5 years after completing their doctorate (degree conferred 2018-2020) OR (2) if the doctorate was earned prior to 2018, the applicant must have started their first tenure-track faculty position between 2018 and 2021.

Application Process

Applicants for 2024-2026 ACPA Emerging Scholar-Designee must submit the following materials in a single PDF document saved as “Last name – Emerging Scholars Application” by 11:59 pm (EST) on Sunday, September 24, 2023:

• A letter of interest that includes the following:

  1. How your scholarly interests and trajectory align with those found in ACPA’s A Bold Vision Forward: A Framework for the Strategic Imperative for Racial Justice and Decolonization.
  2. Please address what you hope to learn from or get out of your engagement with the Senior Scholars. What topics might you wish to discuss with the Senior Scholars over the course of the year?
  3. Your willingness to complete at least two proposed scholarly leadership commitments (see below) during the Emerging Scholars Program two-year period.

(a) Co-coordinate (with a current Senior Scholar or another Emerging Scholar) an ACPA convention session or pre- convention session designed to advance the goals SIRJD.

(b) If selected, serve as designated Scholar-in-Residence (minimum one-year term) for an ACPA Commission, Coalition, or other formally constituted group.

(c) Submit a scholarly piece to ACPA’s Developments.

(d) Other (to be proposed by the candidate) that will advance ACPA’s mission, vision, values, or strategic imperative and is consistent with the applicant’s scholarly agenda. • Current CV

  1. Please tell us about the opportunities you have had to advance your scholarship in your doctoral program and your career to date (e.g., please address your teaching loads, mentoring, internal grant opportunities, etc.).

• At least one recommendation letter (current ACPA Senior Scholars are ineligible to write recommendation letters)

• A research project proposal of no more than three single-spaced pages, excluding cover page and reference list, that includes

  1. A description of the proposed research project (including description of methodology and methods), and how the study advances the applicant’s broader research agenda.
  2. A proposed time frame (ordinarily, no longer than the designee’s two-year term as ACPA Emerging Scholar-Designee).
  3. A brief project budget not to exceed $3,000. Funds may be used for operating expenses including travel for data collection or dissemination. Funds may not be used to purchase equipment or to offset or supplement the designee’s salary or solely to cover conference travel. ACPA funding may not be used to cover F&A/indirect costs.
  4. An explanation of how the proposed research project, within the context of the applicant’s overall research agenda, advances ACPA’s mission, vision, and values as well as ACPA’s Strategic Imperative for Racial Justice and Decolonization (SIRJD).
  5. A commitment to present research findings at a minimum of one ACPA convention during the designee’s two-year term (that is, 2024 Emerging Scholar-Designees must present at either the 2025 or the 2026 convention as part of the sponsored Emerging Scholar research sessions).

Commitments

In addition to completing the scholarly leadership commitments and research project noted in your application, the Emerging Scholars will meet monthly, including with senior scholars bi- monthly. Emerging Scholars are expected to attend the ACPA Convention for the duration of their program. Requests for a one-year unfunded extension or renegotiation of the specified leadership commitments by Emerging Scholars will be considered on a case-by-case basis. The relationship between Emerging and Senior Scholars is envisioned as reciprocal.
