What is the mission and/or objectives of the program?:
Initiated in 1965 by Dr. Merrill “Jack” Beyerl, former Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, the SAAHE program is a minimum 30 credit-hour program (with 1- and 2-year tracks) that emphasizes theory-to-practice, helping students understand contemporary issues in higher education while focusing on the learning and development needs of college students.

What is the pedagogical philosophy of the program?:
Program faculty each bring unique experiences, perspectives, and pedagogical approaches to their classes. Overall, our faculty deploy relational and care-centered pedagogies with a focus on the theory to practice nexus.
What are the learning outcomes of the program?:
Through the SAAHE program, students gain:

  • Knowledge of relevant issues, current events, and functions of programs and services in student affairs.
  • Awareness and ability to apply college student development theories .
  • Understanding of organizational leadership and contemporary issues in higher education
  • Application of learning to assistantship and practicum experiences.
