Let the countdown begin! Join the Coalition for Women’s Identities (CWI) in the excitement – we are officially 100 days away from ACPA’s 100-year anniversary celebration at ACPA24 in Chicago.

The theme of this year’s Convention is “Reflect. Evolve. Act.” These words, and the meaning behind them, resonate deeply with the members of our coalition. As CWI celebrates its own 50-year milestone, we invite you to take a quick trip down memory lane with us to reflect on CWI’s humble beginnings.

On October 19, 1973, a small group of women met to discuss the possibility of forming a Women’s Task Force for ACPA. Their charge? To address the needs of women college students which they, at the time, defined as:

  1. Self-awareness of women students in terms of the current issues and roles of women.

  2. How to express the unique problems of female students without losing the human qualities of personal identity

  3. Leadership models: supplying both negative and positive feedback

  4. Feminists in traditional female professions: the OKness of such a career choice

  5. Communication between involved and non-involved women: breaking down the barriers among the women

  6. Support system for involved women: develop techniques and strategies of support

  7. Super-woman syndrome: everything to everyone

  8. Seminars: women and work

  9. Financial aid for development of courses and centers

(Raise your hand if you can relate to any of those topics today)! And thus, back in 1973, the Standing Committee for Women was formed! In 2014, SCW modified its mission to reflect renewed commitment to the spectrum of women and female-identified people, and our allies, and in spring 2015 the group officially changed its name to the Coalition for Women’s Identities (CWI).

That was just the beginning…and we have a long way to go! Join us to be part of the future of CWI, blazing a new trail of impactful connections, meaningful engagement and celebrations of many more unforgettable milestones.

Mark your calendar for our first virtual group meeting of the new year on Thursday, January 18 at 5 PM EST. We’ll share Zoom information and the agenda closer to the date!
